The Saving Lives Campaign and Global Health Partners are launching a joint campaign to raise the money to purchase and deliver to Cuba more than 60,000 surgical sutures by February, 2026. We are writing to you to encourage you to donate generously to this campaign for life saving medical equipment which will be distributed throughout the nation of Cuba.

Cuba has long been recognized internationally for its achievements in healthcare delivery and medical innovation. However, the country's healthcare system faces significant obstacles in obtaining essential medical equipment and supplies due to the 60+ year-old U.S. blockade and sanctions of Cuba which create substantial barriers to acquiring basic medical equipment and materials.

Recent reporting by Belly of the Beast documented that within the past year, Cuba was the victim of canceled contracts for medical oxygen, pharmaceutical encapsulation equipment, temperature regulation systems, and medications to treat brain tumors. Financial institutions and suppliers frequently withdraw from agreements due to concerns about U.S. sanctions, leaving Cuban healthcare providers unable to procure even fundamentals such as medical gauze and surgical sutures.

These shortages affect patients across all demographics and medical specialties, from emergency trauma care to planned surgical procedures.

Cuba's Healthcare Legacy:

Since 1959, Cuba's healthcare system has achieved remarkable public health milestones, including extending life expectancy. dramatic lowering of maternal-child death rates, the elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission and the development of innovative vaccine therapies for meningitis, lung cancer, Covid and many others. Their international medical missions have served in over 60 countries. These achievements are being threatened by US sanctions. The country maintains a system of free, universal healthcare for its population. However, even the most well-designed healthcare infrastructure cannot function effectively without adequate medical supplies.
